Which European countries have the highest percentage of population that travels?

Key observations:
  • In half of analysed countries the percentage of population that travels is higher than 50%.
  • In five countries the percentage of population that travels is higher than 70%. These are Norway (76%), Luxembourg (75%), Switzerland (74%), Denmark (73%), Netherlands (71%).
  • Romania has the lowest share of population that travels (10%). The value for Romania is more than 2 times lower than the second lowest value (Bulgaria, 22%).

Methodology and data source information:
Percentage of population that travels was calculated by dividing the number of tourists aged 15 years or over from a given country by the population aged 15 years or over of that country. The number of tourists is the number of residents that travelled for personal purposes for at least 4 consecutive nights in a given year. The analysis covers both domestic and outbound trips.
