Population of the metropolitan area of the capital city as a percentage of the country population

04/02/2017

Key observations:
  • In three analysed countries the share of population of the metropolitan area of the capital city over the country population is less than 10%. They are Germany (5%), Italy (7%) and Poland (8%).
  • In two analysed countries the share of population of the metropolitan area of the capital city over the country population is 40%. They are Estonia and Ireland.
  • Countries with higher population tend to have lower share of population of the metropolitan area of the capital city over the country population (correlation coefficient of -0.66). Germany, the most populous country in Europe, has the lowest share of population of the metropolitan area of the capital city over the country population. However, the values for the second and the third most populous countries in Europe (France and United Kingdom) are close to the average for analysed countries.
