Key observations:
  • In 157 out of 181 countries Google website is the top website (website that generates the most traffic). In 66 countries Google.com is the website that generates the most traffic, while in 91 countries local Google websites (e.g. Google.co.uk) generate the most traffic.
  • In 24 countries the top website is not Google. In 13 out of these countries the top website is Youtube.com. In 2 countries it is Vk.com - Russian social network page. In other 9 countries the top websites are unique (6 of them are news websites and 3 are search portals).
  • In 19 out of 24 countries in which Google is not the top website, it is the second one. Google has the lowest rank in China (12th place).

Methodology and data source information:
The top sites are based on their 1 month Alexa traffic rank. The 1 month rank is calculated using a combination of average daily visitors and page views over the past month. The site with the highest combination of visitors and page views is ranked #1.

Number of direct flight connections to other countries

Key observations:
  • One of analysed countries (France) has direct flight connections to more than 100 other countries.
  • The lowest number of direct flight connections to other countries have Bosnia and Herzegovina (18) and Slovenia (19).
  • Analysed countries (34 countries) have direct connections to 135 countries in the world. 29 out of 135 countries have direct flight connections to only one of analysed countries. One of these countries is in Europe - it is Monaco with helicopter connection with France.
  • Four analysed countries have direct flight connections to all other analysed countries. They are Austria, Germany, France and United Kingdom. Thirteen analysed countries have direct flight connections to at least 30 of analysed countries.
  • Turkey and Israel are the most connected countries with the analysed European countries. Turkey has connections to 33 analysed countries and Israel to 30 analysed countries.

Methodology and data source information:
The analysis covers flight connections to 195 countries (member states and permanent observers of the United Nations, e.g. Kosovo or Taiwan were not included). Number of flight connections is based on Skyscanner search queries over the period of 15 days. Connections within a given country were not counted.

Population of the metropolitan area of the capital city as a percentage of the country population

Key observations:
  • In three analysed countries the share of population of the metropolitan area of the capital city over the country population is less than 10%. They are Germany (5%), Italy (7%) and Poland (8%).
  • In two analysed countries the share of population of the metropolitan area of the capital city over the country population is 40%. They are Estonia and Ireland.
  • Countries with higher population tend to have lower share of population of the metropolitan area of the capital city over the country population (correlation coefficient of -0.66). Germany, the most populous country in Europe, has the lowest share of population of the metropolitan area of the capital city over the country population. However, the values for the second and the third most populous countries in Europe (France and United Kingdom) are close to the average for analysed countries.
